Hey Matt. Yep, announcement a bit pointless really; think you said it all. What could they put in it? I guess most valuable addition as always would be a tad higher resolution (20? but can't see how a lot more than that would be of significant benefit given existing image qual at 16) and the usual advancement in ISO performance and on-board processing. I don't use one; no call for it with what I do (or funds!), so I don't know what else would offer benefit in the way of ergonomics, etc. 15 fps has been talked about; maybe they'll go to hybrid mirror/mirrorless with an electronic shutter to avoid the internals going supersonic :o)

My take away is that Nikon is going to continue to try to sell a $600 add-on in order for photographers to work with their Top-end camera in the same way they work with the prosumer counterparts. Wireless tethering, remote control, transfer are part of how we work in the 21st century.

What is the purpose of the D4 / D5 line in an age of D750 and D810?

Very disappointing announcement, after all this time I was expecting a release announcement, not a we've started thinking about it message.

As a long term user of the D3x (I also own the D750 & D4... did own a D800), it seems to me that the D5 range should be something along the lines of D5 24M but with the usual insane buffering and FPS, primarily for the Paps. And a D5x should be full body 45M-50M (or a pumped version of the D810). Some of us enjoy the full body camera ;-)

The most important addition for me is 10 bit video and preferably NOT in a MOV container. MOV video with 24 Mbps average bit rate is not broadcast nor professional and will never be.
Besides a better codec I would like to be able to choose another container! I am not an Apple user and converting MOV files is a pain!
I see no point in buying a Nikon D5 without at least HDMI REC-2020 out. I hope Nikon will start to treat video as professional as they treat photography.
No more low bit rates nor 8 bits chroma sampling!
    And rather no MOV...

It seems they are far away from releasing a new top of the line product. And with this pseudo announcement they hope to prevent their customers from changing to the competition ;-)
