The majority of Matt's time is spent on portrait and event shoots.
To keep the creative juices flowing, and to contribute to worthy causes, Matt has several other projects simmering away.
Sydney in Focus - is a photographic essay profiling some of Sydney's icons, raising money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Will culminate in an exhibition in Art Month 2012.
Private Bodies (working title) will photograph people of all walks of life, naked in their own homes. The home is the one domain that is considered safe and ‘private’ enough for most people to bare all. What happens when the private body is made public in this way? The hope is that subjects will be left empowered and with a new relationship to their own body and sense of self. People from all walks of life – all ages, body types, genders, sexualities and nationalities – are invited to participate. The final cross section of people included will be determined by who puts their hand up to be involved.
Strangers - why don't people trust photographers these days? I want to explore these issues.
Visit each project page on the left for full information.
It seems that trust for photographers is very low these days, perhaps thanks to digital trickery and the bad image of paparazi photographers. Surely 60 years ago, someone wanting to take your photo would have been a thrill and a joy - not something that immediately raises the question - why are they photographing me? What's the hustle?
To examine this and break down his own hesistance to approach people, Matt Granger is currently working on a series of portraits of strangers. The working title of the project is Perfect Strangers. People will be approached cold, and will only be photographed if they agree to it willingly prior. Each participant will be asked their first name, which will appear with the location of the photo.
Majority of shots will probably be simply lit snapshot on the street. However I will ask if some people are open to giving me a few more minutes, or setting up a proper shoot, to produce some more sophisticated shots.
If you are a stranger and willing to be photographed for this project, please make contact.
